Elena Giovanna Bignami, MD

Biography

Professor Elena Giovanna Bignami is Full Professor of Anesthesiology at the University of Parma's Department of Medicine and Surgery and Director of the 2nd Anesthesia, Resuscitation and Pain Therapy Unit at the University Hospital of Parma. She graduated in medicine at the University of Milan, completed specialist training in anaesthesia and resuscitation at Vita-Salute San Raffaele University, and undertook senior clinical work in cardiac, thoracic and vascular anaesthesia and intensive care at San Raffaele from 2004 to 2017 before transferring to Parma in 2018, where she became director of the unit in June 2019. She has directed the University of Parma postgraduate school in anaesthesia, resuscitation, intensive care and pain medicine since February 2018 and was appointed full professor at the end of 2017. She serves as President of the Italian Society of Anaesthesia, Analgesia, Resuscitation and Intensive Care (SIAARTI) for the 2025 to 2027 term. Her clinical and academic work spans anaesthesia, intensive care, pain medicine, perioperative medicine, cardiothoracic anaesthesia, resuscitation, clinical research and interprofessional education. Her recent work addresses artificial intelligence in resuscitation, perioperative AI, telemedicine, wearable monitoring, and the clinical validation and governance questions raised by technology entering anaesthesia and critical-care workflows.
