Giovanni Rubeis, Dr phil habil

Biography

Professor Giovanni Rubeis is Professor of Health Care Ethics and Head of the Health Care Ethics Division at the Institute of Moral Theology, University of Graz, an appointment he took up in March 2026. A philosopher and medical ethicist, he read philosophy at the University of Vienna, earned his doctorate at the University of Tübingen and completed his habilitation in the ethics of healthcare digitalisation at Heidelberg University. His academic career spans Austria and Germany, including a professorship in Biomedical and Public Health Ethics at Karl Landsteiner University of Health Sciences in Krems and the chair of Medical Ethics and History at Greifswald Medical School, where he also headed the Institute of Medical Ethics and History. His research examines the ethical and social implications of digital health, artificial intelligence in medicine, data ethics, assistive technologies for older adults and digital mental health. He is the author of Ethics of Medical AI and co-founder of the working group on Digitalisation and Health of the German Academy of Ethics in Medicine.
