Biography

Professor Iain Buchan is a public health physician and data scientist at the University of Liverpool, where he is W.H. Duncan Chair in Public Health Systems, Associate Pro Vice Chancellor for Innovation and founding Director of Civic Health Innovation Labs. His work harnesses data, data science and related technologies to protect and improve health in defined populations and civic systems, including population-health interventions with artificial intelligence. His public roles also include Associate Medical Director of Cheshire and Merseyside Integrated Care Board and Non-Executive Director of Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust. Earlier, he built a major health-informatics and data-science group at the University of Manchester, contributed to the Farr Institute and Health Data Research UK, and developed approaches to learning health systems, adaptive clinical prediction, trusted health-data environments and civic data partnerships. In Liverpool he led award-winning, data-intensive COVID-19 responses, including evaluation of voluntary rapid antigen testing and risk-mitigated reopening of mass cultural events. He is a Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health, the American College of Medical Informatics and the Faculty of Clinical Informatics, and has received the Faculty of Public Health Alwyn-Smith medal and the Royal Statistical Society Florence Nightingale prize. His current work includes preventive healthcare AI, conversational care, predictive care, public trust and health-system value.
