Biography

Professor Samy A. Azer is an Australian physician and medical educator affiliated with King Saud University in Riyadh and a Senior Editorial Board Member of BMC Medical Education. He trained in gastroenterology, earned a PhD from the University of Sydney, and completed master's degrees in education and public health at the University of New South Wales. His academic career includes senior lectureships at the universities of Sydney and Melbourne, a professorship at Universiti Teknologi MARA in Malaysia, and a visiting professorship at the University of Toyama in Japan. His educational work spans curriculum development, problem-based learning, student assessment and self-directed learning in health-professions education. He has authored textbooks in medicine and medical education, including Navigating Problem Based Learning, and is a Fellow of the American College of Gastroenterology and of the Association for Medical Education in Europe. His recent editorial work includes co-editing BMC Medical Education collections on AI in medical and professional health education and on AI in curriculum development and assessment. These address educational uses of AI, preparation of health professionals, assessment and continuing professional development.
