Stefan Buijsman, PhD

Biography

Dr Stefan Buijsman is Associate Professor of Responsible AI in the Ethics and Philosophy of Technology section at Delft University of Technology and Managing Director of the Delft Digital Ethics Centre, designated by the World Health Organization in March 2025 as a WHO Collaborating Centre on AI for health governance. He studied computer science and philosophy at Leiden University and completed a PhD in philosophy of mathematics at Stockholm University at the age of 20. His research brings epistemology and philosophy of science into the design and governance of artificial-intelligence systems, focusing on explainability, value-based transparency, justified human reliance, accountability and the preservation of autonomy in AI-supported decisions, translating ethical values into requirements usable by engineers, organisations, policymakers and regulators. In healthcare, he works across TU Delft, Erasmus MC and Erasmus University Rotterdam on responsible implementation, operationalisation of WHO ethical principles, diversity and equity, epistemic dependence, and the gap between technical development and clinical adoption. He also co-leads the Convergence Center for Responsible AI in Health Care. Alongside his academic work, he has written public-facing books on mathematics and artificial intelligence, including Pluses and Minuses and AI: Alsmaar Intelligenter.
