Biography
Professor Vimla L. Patel is an Adjunct Professor of Biomedical Informatics at Columbia University and of Health Policy and Research at Weill Cornell College of Medicine. Previously, she served as Senior Research Scientist and Director of the Center for Cognitive Studies in Medicine and Public Health at the New York Academy of Medicine. She read biochemistry at the University of Otago and holds an MA and a PhD in educational and cognitive psychology, with a focus on medical cognition, from McGill University in Montreal. Her research helped establish the cognitive foundations of medical reasoning, clinical decision-making, and health-professions learning, and subsequently extended those approaches into cognitive informatics. Her academic career has included faculty and leadership positions at McGill University, Columbia University, New York Academy of Medicine, Arizona State University, and the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and of the American College of Medical Informatics and the International Academy of Health Sciences Informatics. A former associate editor of the Journal of Biomedical Informatics and assistant editor of AI in Medicine, she is currently an editor of the Springer book series on Cognitive Informatics in Biomedicine in Healthcare.
